Biomass combined heat and power plant

    Ilmenau

In Ilmenau we operate a biomass-fired combined heat and power plant that produces electricity and heat in a very efficient cogeneration process. The CHP plant has an installed electric capacity of about five megawatts and a connected capacity of ten megawatts of heat. The heat is transferred to the city's existing district heating network.

The energy produced suffices to cover a quarter of the city's power consumption plus half of the required district heating energy. Connected to the district heating network are public buildings, residential areas and commercial and industrial enterprises. The waste wood fired in the plant mainly consists of industrial wood residues and wood from bulky waste, for instance chipboard. Suppliers from Thuringia, northern Bavaria and eastern Hesse deliver the wood in the form of ready-to-burn chips.
