Heating comfort with a good environmental footprint
District heating is the only future technology which permits integrating renewable energy sources quickly and economically into a large-area heating supply system. This is because not only conventional energy sources can be used to produce district heating, but geothermal energy or biomass as well.
As one of the biggest nationally operating suppliers of district heating, we have decades of experience in this field. We plan, implement and operate power generation and distribution facilities for district heating supply. Alone or in joint ventures with local authorities or public utilities we set up city, city district or independent supply systems designed to achieve optimum security of supply.
Thus, in cooperation with local authorities we operate one of the largest regional district heating networks in Germany: the Saar district heating trunking line is a fully developed network extending a distance of 35 kilometers from Dillingen to Saarbrücken. The short district heating transport distances benefit the environment as well as being economically advantageous: the value created stays in the region.
Much of our district heating is produced in cogeneration plants that generate power and district heating simultaneously. That is especially efficient, conserves resources, and is a contribution to active environmental protection. The hot water produced during this process is transported to the consumers through a system of pipes.
In our plants we use the source of energy optimally suited to the specific task in each case: this can be industrial waste heat, natural gas or, of course, geothermal energy or biomass. And in each case the users get what they want: comfortable heat without having to expend effort themselves.
District heating in Gröditz
Since as early as 1993, STEAG New Energies has been supplying feelgood heating to the city of Gröditz. The customers include industries, commercial enterprises, housing companies, public buildings and private households. Two boiler systems and a new unit-type combined heat and power plant are fueled by natural gas to ensure the supply of heat.
District heating in Fürstenwalde
Since 1977, the 12 km long district heating network has been reliably and conveniently supplying housing companies, public buildings, private customers, industry and commercial enterprises with district heating. Production is handled by two unit-type combined heat and power plants with capacities of 2.0 MWel and 1.2 MWel.
District heating in Rochlitz
Energieversorgung Rochlitz GmbH
In 1992, the City of Rochlitz (51 %) and STEAG New Energies GmbH (49 %) founded Energieversorgung Rochlitz GmbH (EVR). EVR supplies heating especially to residential properties and public buildings managed by state, county and local authorities. In addition, district heating services in Geithain are supported by the facilities in Rochlitz.
District heating in Winnenden
Fernwärme Winnenden GmbH & Co. KG
What began with the deployment of a mobile energy unit has developed into a sizeable district heating supply system with a connected load of 45 megawatts. Today Fernwärme Winnenden GmbH & Co. KG in Winnenden (Baden-Württemberg) supplies the Schelmenholz district, the development areas Waiblinger Berg and Lange Weiden and parts of downtown Winnenden.
District heating in Werl
In Werl (North Rhine-Westphalia), city on the medieval Hellweg road, in the year 2000 we set up a district heating supply system whose connected load today is 15 megawatts. Initially, a mobile central energy plant provided the necessary heat; from 2003 the Werl biomass-fired combined heat and power plant took over supply duty.
District heating in Mayen
In Mayen (Rhineland-Palatinate), together with partners we have set up a district heating supply system which operates exclusively on waste heat from a paper mill.
